Charlemagne, King of the Franks, became emperor of these lands when crowned by the Pope in AD 800. On Charlemagne's death in 814 the empire was divided between his sons and grandsons. Much of central Europe, from the Baltic to the Alps, and from France to the Slav borders remained under the rule of the Germanic emperors, inheritors of the western "Roman" Empire.  Perfect piece for most medieval military diorama setups.
